With all the due respect, You must not know a lot about IPA. Obviously not all dictionaries you showed weren't using IPA. I just say this: two(2) words pronounce the same can't be written different with IPA, IMPOSSIBLE one symbol for one sound. The same symbol equal the same sound in every language. If two dictionaries write two different IPA SYMBOL, then It means those dictionnaires think the words should be pronounced differently. Last precision a transcription between [ ] is a phonetik which tells you exactly how to pronounce a word. A transcription between / / is phonological and might not take into account the influence that the sounds around have had on one another that is important in the final sound obtained. Thank you. i think i get the difference, I always thought zh can be pronounced like the sz in Szasza, a name of a celebrity in my country, Philippines. It's not pronounced like "S, za" which is Sza, a singer in another country. The sz is pronounced like the s in usual, if I were to describe it, it would be a vibrating sh sound or sh but with the vibration of z. The thing is, I cannot ever tell the difference when listening to songs.

I'm from Iowa and I pronounce short o and aw, au, ough the same. I don't really think it is true that most Americans distinguish the two. I've only heard people on the east coast do it, and not really anyone from any other area.
